Whether you can paint like Wyland or just like drawing whales, The Festival of Whales Foundation Board and its logo committee are looking for a unique design to mark the upcoming golden anniversary.
The Festival of Whales, planned for March 6 and 7, will mark the festival’s 50th anniversary, but unlike previous years, it will not be held over two weekends.
“Whether we are allowed to proceed with some of our traditional events in person or switch to a hybrid in-person/virtual model, we will not miss the opportunity to celebrate this long-standing and iconic Dana Point celebration,” Donna Kalez, Festival of Whales foundation president said in a statement. “Whether COVID restrictions persist or ease, the whales don’t mind and will, as always, grace our coast with their awe-inspiring presence during their annual migration.”
Whale watching excursions have been operating out of Dana Point with coronavirus protocols in place for socially distanced viewing.
In the past decades, the festival has drawn hundreds of thousands of people to Dana Point over the two weekends. The festival always begins with the traditional Festival of Whales parade and includes various whale-inspired events at the Dana Point harbor. There is also a whale and marine mammal lecture series that includes experts from across Southern California. Festival activities in 2021 will be tailored to those fitting with coronavirus restrictions, officials said.
Logo entries must include a likeness of a California gray whale – it can be a whale fluke, a mother and calf or a full whale. It must also include the words “Dana Point Festival of Whales, March 6 and 7, 2021.” The logo design can also include other key Dana Point elements such as the Dana Point headlands, ocean, surf or other wildlife.
Designs will be posted on social media for a public vote. The winning logo will be selected from the top four by the festival board and logo committee. The winning design will appear on all promotional items associated with the Festival of Whales and the artist will receive $500 and two whale watch tickets.
Past winners have included local high school students and professional artists.
Designs must be submitted for consideration by midnight on Jan. 10 at dpfestivalofwhales@gmail.com.
