Gunfire strikes 1 at party with 100 people in Placentia dance studio

A fight broke out amidst a large gathering at a dance studio in Placentia early Sunday, Dec. 6, which led to a shooting that left one person wounded.

About 100 people were at the studio on the 900 block of Via Rodeo, which had been rented for the evening to a third party hosting an event, Placentia Police Sgt. Chris Anderson said. Officers were summoned there after receiving reports of shots fired at 1:12 a.m.

A man suffering from two gunshot wounds to his leg was taken to the hospital, police said. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators found two apparently discarded and loaded handguns in the parking lot of the industrial complex. Anderson said. Authorities suspect at least one may have been used in the shooting.

The owner of the dance studio is cooperating with police, but the man wounded at the business and several others detained at the gathering provided few details to investigators, Anderson said. No other injuries were reported.

Police were working Sunday evening to learn why so many people were gathered, why a fight broke out and how it resulted in gunfire. A description of any possible suspect was not available.

Orange County recently went under the state’s coronavirus purple tier restrictions, which do not allow 100 people to gather in a dance studio. A more stringent shutdown goes into effect Sunday, Dec. 6 at 11:59 p.m.

Authorities asked anyone with information regarding the incident to call Placentia police at 714-993-8164. Tips can also be left anonymously with Orange County Crime Stoppers by calling 855-TIP-OCCS (855-847-6227) or visiting http://occrimestoppers.org.
