Coronavirus state tracker: California reports all-time high of 34,136 new cases in a day and surpasses 20,000 deaths as of Dec. 8

The numbers continue to surge. The state reported on Tuesday, Dec. 8, a record number of 34,136 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number of infections to 1,384,786, according to official totals from California public health websites.

There were also 112 new deaths reported in the state on Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths to 20,049.

Hospitalizations in the state surpassed 11,000 for the first time Tuesday. A spike of 513 new patients in the last day brought the number of people hospitalized to 11,511, an increase of  284% from Oct. 27 when hospitalizations dropped to their lowest point, 2,991 people.
