Yorba Linda Country Riders trot into the future with 50th anniversary show

A Sunday at the arena.

Horses brushed and shined to perfection. Their riders in similar fashion, ready for competition.

It’s a tradition in Yorba Linda, 50 years in the making.

The Yorba Linda Country Riders held its golden anniversary show on Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Philip S. Paxton Equestrian Center starting with English riding in the morning, followed by Western in the afternoon.

The show drew dozens of riders, from the youngest on their mounts led at a walk and then a trot around the arena, to the advanced equestrians so in sync with their horse their commands barely noticeable. Five silver buckles were awarded at the end of the day.

Yorba Linda Country Riders President Dee Dee Friedrich has watched her own children win in the arena as well as her grandchildren. For many, the show is a family affair as well as a don’t-miss gathering of the community.

For five decades, the Country Riders has been at the heart of Yorba Linda’s equestrian community. Friedrich has been with the group for some 30 of those years.

“We are still ticking along,” she said of the city’s equestrian community and the club so many are members of – it’s roster is 300 families strong, she said.

Though most of the big ranches in town are gone, many homes with barns remain. Horses are regularly exercised at the Paxton arena or have their legs stretched walking the miles of city trails.

Friedrich pointed out the city still requires trail fencing be put around new developments. “We are happy that we still include us.”
