Nurse suspected of sexual battery on wheelchair-bound patient in Santa Ana

Police arrested an Anaheim man last week who is suspected of exposing and brushing his genitals against the hand of an elderly woman who was confined to a wheelchair, officials said Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Gabriel Arce, 46, was booked Thursday, Oct. 8, on suspicion sexual battery, indecent exposure and elder abuse, Santa Ana police said in a news release. He was released the following day after posting bail, according to inmate records.

Investigators believe that six days prior to his arrest he victimized a 73-year-old patient who was in his care at South Coast Post Acute Facility, 1030 W. Warner Ave., where he has worked as a nurse and unit supervisor for over a year. Another employee at the health care facility walked into the room when the alleged incident took place and then reported it to authorities, police said.

Arce has not been allowed to have contact with patients since his arrest, Bertagna said. Representatives for South Coast Post Acute Facility did not immediately respond to requests for comment on his employment status, or the accusations against him.

The suspect has worked in at least two other health care facilities since 2011, Bertagna said. One is also in Santa Ana, and the other is in Long Beach.

Authorities think Arce may have other victims, Bertagna said. Anyone with information that might be relevant to investigators should call Santa Ana Police Detective Corona at 714-245-8343.
