Laguna Woods’ GRF Board: Meet the Candidates

Five candidates are vying for seats on the Golden Rain Foundation Board.

The GRF Board is elected by the corporate members, who represent the residents. There are four seats available for election on Nov. 12.

The five candidates are Joan Milliman, Berton Moldow, Lyn Stanley, Sue Stephens and Mark Greenman.

We received completed questionnaires from four of the candidates. Greenman did not respond to multiple requests for a completed questionnaire.

JOAN A. MILLIMAN

Years in Laguna Woods Village: 12

Education: BA English/Music, Occidental College; Hon. MA Musicology, Cambridge University, U.K.; Ph.D  Musicology, USC; two teaching credentials – Occidental, Cal State Northridge; classwork for MA in psychotherapy; certificate in hypnotherapy

Occupation/Business experience: Management advisory services – editor, supervisor, consultant — Laventhol & Horwath, CPA firm, 1980-88; own consulting business – Arts Management, 5 years, 1988-1990; board member and a founder of Music at Angel Fire, N.M., 1989; high school faculty chairperson trained as a group manager and team builder through UCLA’s Anderson School of Management; teacher and union representative for LAUSD, 1992-2002; instructor at USC, Humboldt State U. – various – 1966-70; 1976

Personal statement: I have greatly enjoyed serving on the GRF Board and hope to continue to do so. I believe my knowledge of board protocol and Laguna Woods Village boards’ history can be helpful in establishing a positive legacy for the current board and a good future for the Village residents.

What one improvement or change do you think would enhance life in the Village for its residents? Continued development of communications among the boards, management and the residents, so everyone is heard and knows what’s going on.

BERTON MOLDOW

Years in Laguna Woods: 10

Personal Statement: Using my educational and business experience I have been the impetus to bring to Laguna Woods energy conservation and generation technology such as LED lighting, solar, resulting in financial savings of over $1 million. I will work to see new money-saving technological opportunities implemented if reelected.

What one improvement or change do I think would enhance life in the  village or its residents: Energy blackouts will become more prevalent due to climate change. I want to see the Village implement existing technology that eliminates such occurrences.

LYN STANLEY

Years in Laguna Woods Village: As a tenant, 2 years; as an owner, 5 months

Music LLC (2013 to present); international recording artist and performer (2011 to present); marketing and communications strategic consultant (5 years); marketing director/strategic planner for Fortune 500 companies (25 years); associate professor/adjunct instructor: Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, Michigan State University, Wayne State University and CSU Fullerton; commercial real estate appraiser, CB Richard Ellis, Integra (5 years)

Laguna Woods Village Affiliations/Activities: Stage performer, ballroom dance community, Baby Boomers Club (new member), walking/swimming

Personal statement: I bring a unique perspective to the governance as a former tenant and now owner. My experience includes marketing at the director level for Fortune 500s, including positions leading customer strategies. As a former HOA president of two communities, I focused on asset appreciation, cost controls and quality of life.

What one improvement or change do you think would enhance life in the Village for its residents? Better (and open) communication problem solving channels via interactive and effective protocol, from resident to the boards and management entities and vice versa.

SUE STEPHENS

Years in Laguna Woods Village: 2

Occupation/business experience: Energy program manager — Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy (2012-2016); senior management analyst, State of Nevada Health and Human Services (2011-2012); consultant (2009-2010); power resources principal/manager — City of Anaheim, California (1989-2009); power contracts engineer — Southern California Edison Company (1972-1989); previous positions: management analyst, financial analyst, operational auditor, technical writer

Laguna Woods Village Affiliations/Activities: GRF director Business Planning Committee, Disaster Preparedness Task Force Village Energy Task Force (adviser); president of the Country Music Dance Club

Personal statement: I will use my extensive experience in improving effectiveness and efficiency of organizations, writing and managing contracts, developing guidelines for emergency response, and implementing energy efficiency projects to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the Village while increasing the value of its assets for all residents.

What one improvement or change do you think would enhance life in the Village for its residents? Improve communication between the boards, VMS and the residents.
