Heat wave to bring above-average temperatures to Southern California

A system of cool air blew into Southern California, giving its inhabitants a semblance of autumnal weather this weekend, a respite from the barrage of heat  waves.

However, starting Monday, weather experts expect Santa Ana winds to sweep into the region, bringing dry air and high temperatures that may be well above the average levels for early October.

The heat wave is forecast to last until Friday, said Samantha Connolly, meteorologist with the National Weather Service San Diego office. The hottest temperatures are expected from Tuesday to Thursday.

The inland areas of Orange and Los Angeles counties can expect temperatures in the high 90s with Woodland Hills possibly hitting 100; while some cities in the Inland Empire like Riverside, Lake Elsinore and San Bernardino may see triple-digit weather.

Temperatures in the coastal cities from Malibu to San Clemente will hover in the mid to high 80s, according to the weather service.

Anaheim may see a new daily record broken on Wednesday.

Generally throughout the region, temperatures may soar 10 to 15 degrees, and possibly 20 degrees warmer than averages for this time of year, said Tom Fisher, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Los Angeles office. Those averages are based on data from the last 30 years.

Though Santa Anas are blowing into Southern California, the actual wind speeds are expected to be low, Fisher said. This means, he said, residents will possibly be spared of red flag advisories for increased fire risk.

In a statement warning residents about the oncoming heat wave, the Weather Service recommended using caution when working or recreating outdoors, seeking shade or, if possible, air conditioning, drinking plenty of water, never leaving people or pets inside a hot vehicle, and using extra caution with any source of fire.

On Friday, Fisher said temperatures may drop back to typical levels for early October.
