Fires, poor air quality impact Orange County high school sports

Yorba Linda High football coach Jeff Bailey said he took a look around his house just after midnight Tuesday.

“I got up and looked around,” Bailey said, “and the smoke was so thick I thought my house might be on fire.”

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District canceled all athletic activity on Tuesday, and all instruction, in-person and online, was eliminated.

Bailey as of Tuesday afternoon did not know the status of Wednesday’s athletics, but given the prominent layer of smoke around the school he anticipated another day with no football conditioning drills.

Fullerton Joint Union High School District high schools (Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, Sonora, Sunny Hills and Troy) canceled Tuesday’s outdoor sports activities. La Habra football coach Frank Mazzotta said the status of Wednesday’s practices was a “wait and see” situation.

Tuesday’s cancellation of practice reminded Mazzotta of the 2007 football season. La Habra’s Freeway League game against Fullerton was canceled because of area fires. The Highlanders would play Fullerton in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division championship game that was won by La Habra 16-6 to cap a 13-0 season.

Tustin Unified high schools Beckman, Foothill and Tustin canceled outdoors sports practices Tuesday. The status of Wednesday’s practices had not been decided as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.

Mater Dei and Santa Margarita, Orange County’s two largest Catholic high schools, shut down outdoors sports action Tuesday.
